Matt has over 20 years of delivering pro-active legal and
strategic counsel at senior executive level from start-ups to
global multinationals. He has extensive experience in and
knowledge of the telecoms and Internet industry and significant
international experience in Europe and Latin America.
Most recently, Matt was Senior Vice President, General Counsel
and Secretary of VIA NET.WORKS, Inc., an international Internet
Services Provider. As a member of the founding executive team,
he directly supported the growth of the company from $0 to +$100
million in revenues through acquisitions and the development of
enterprise-wide technology platforms to offer a comprehensive
portfolio of business communications services. Matt also led
the corporate development function and managed over 40 M&A
transactions over the course of 7+ years with VIA.
Prior to VIA, Matt held a corporate development role at MCI
Communications as Director of Ventures & Alliances, responsible
for managing MCI's joint venture interests with British
Telecommunications and also supporting the merger between the
two companies. Earlier, he served as senior counsel in MCI's
consumer markets group. Matt was in private law practice for 9
years prior to MCI, of which the last six were with the
corporate and transactional practice group of Donovan Leisure
Newton & Irvine, an international law firm. At Donovan Leisure,
Matt concentrated in corporate law, public and private debt and
equity placements and transactional business.
Matt has a B.A. degree with honors in Philosophy from Bucknell
University. He earned his J.D. degree from the University of
Virginia School of Law and a Master's Degree in Foreign Affairs
from the University of Virginia Graduate School of Arts and
Joe has been executing and advising on the full spectrum of
corporate finance activities in Europe for the last 10 years.
He has been involved in M&A, equity raising, debt offerings, and
joint ventures in most European countries and the US for
companies in the technology and telecom space.
Joe has managed a corporate finance advisory practice since 2002
and has concluded many successful deals for small to mid size
companies to help them achieve their strategic goals. His
clients have included VIA NET.WORKS, Teleman (a JV between Bell
South and Safra Bank), Citibank, KPNQwest Italy, Viola Systems
Oy, and several private investment funds.
Prior to founding his own advisory business, Joe was a Vice
President of Corporate Development at KPNQwest NV. In this role
he was responsible for all merger and acquisition activity and
public market equity and debt offerings for a multi-billion
dollar global network company. Before KPNQwest, Joe was the
group controller for EUnet International BV, an international
ISP with 15 offices in 13 countries and was responsible for the
accounting and finance staff across the group.
Joe has a B.S. from the University of Nevada - Las Vegas and an
M.B.A . from Nyenrode University in The Netherlands.
Brian brings operational sensitivity and experience to Areté
For the last 15 years Brian has been a senior executive
operating businesses for US companies in Europe & the US. At
both Chesapeake Corporation (industrial) and most recently VIA
NET.WORKS Inc. (managed IT/telecom services), Brian has focused
on driving the organic sales growth as well as the acquisition,
restructuring, and subsequent integration of newly acquired
Brian was based in Paris for 7 years from 1996 to 2003, and in
Amsterdam from 2003 to 2005 where he was most was most recently
Regional VP Europe for VIA NET.WORKS Inc., responsible for
leading the company's largest business unit as well as
completing the restructuring/integration activities given VIA's
acquisition of PSINet Europe. In this role, Brian oversaw a P&L
of US$70M in revenue with 350 employees and oversaw Managing
Directors in 5 countries (Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium,
France, and Germany). Before moving into operations at VIA,
Brian held numerous business development and M&A roles at Morgan
Stanley, Chesapeake Corporation and VIA NET.WORKS Inc, involving
over 15 transactions valued over $100million.
Brian is an international manager comfortable in diverse
geographic environments and driving success in cross-cultural
teams. He has extensive international field experience, 10+
years in Europe & Latin America--speaking English (native),
French and Spanish fluently and while an American, he also hold
an Irish passport.
Brian graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul Minnesota
where he currently serves as a Trustee and chair of the Academic
Affairs committee. Brian also completed a Master's of Science
at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in Washington, DC. He
currently resides in New York City.
